I wish I was more like you.
I envy your mechanical mind;
your ability to deconstruct.
I wish I had your faith.
Instead,
I have only cultivated a cold cynicism,
no doubt the product of a nihilistic culture.
I wish I had your fortitude.
You always made things work,
no matter the odds.
You’ve shown me the ways a man is made
and yet,
I still find myself falling short
of the hero you are to me.
On the days that I have hope,
I dream that I am a man like you;
a friend,
a confidant,
a mentor.
My father.
Happy Birthday,
Dad.
