You Were

if you ever felt safe
with me;
you were.

if you ever felt secure
with me;
you were.

if you ever felt unlovable by me,
that you couldn’t possibly be loved
with messy hair,
with a little extra weight,
in old sweatpants;
you were.

if you ever felt undeserving of me,
that you did not deserve a love
that is patient
and kind,
a love that does not envy
or boast,
a love that always protects
always trusts
always hopes
and a love that always perseveres;
you were.

if you ever felt free with me,
that you could sail high
on the winds of freedom
unfettered by the chains of guilt
and shame;
you were.

if you ever felt peace with me,
that with me,
you could be loved for all that you are
and loved for all of the things you were not;
you were.

if you ever felt loved by me,
glorified in a way that honors God
and honors you,
pushed to become more than you thought you could be
and elevated to love God even more because of it;

you were.

And you
were all of those things
to me.
