The Four Prohibitions

Oftentimes
we found ourselves
in a constant state
of mental being
known
as shikai.
There are four elements
that guide
this state.

Kyo
or ‘surprise’.
What do we  become
when we are surprised?
We stop moving,
we hold our breath,
rooted in apprehension.

Ku
or ‘fear’.
We become
like the frog
confronting a viper
about to strike.
We become rooted
in fear
and things become
much bigger
than they really are.

Gi
or ‘doubt’.
When we doubt our actions
and the actions
of those around us,
we fail to make a choice;
Doubt in our path
causes us to perform
poorly.

Waku
or ‘confusion’.
We cannot make decisions.
A haze drifts over your thoughts
and clouds your judgement.
This results
in our circumstances
getting the better of us.

When properly attuned
we may enter
a different state of mind.
Heijoshin,
or ‘normal mind’.
Our mind becomes
like still water;
flat on the surface,
undisturbed,
yet wrought with unfathomable
power.

Breathe.
In.
Now out.
Breathe again.

Enter heijoshin.

Be still.
