3 a.m.
I jolt out of bed
awakened by another bad dream.
There had been a string of such nightmares
for the last couple of days,
each one more unnerving
than the last.
I slowly roll out of bed
to use the restroom.
I don’t bother turning on the lights,
because I know that if I do,
it’ll take that much longer
to get back to sleep.
The familiar sound of the toilet flushing
guides me back to my bed,
and I gently roll back in and pull the covers
up to my waist.
I turn over to see her there,
fast asleep,
chestnut hair like a river of chocolate
slowly flowing
down her shoulders
and onto the bed,
her chest softly rising
and falling
with each beautiful breath
she takes.
I inch closer and kiss the back of her neck
hoping to make whatever it is she’s dreaming about
that much sweeter.
I wrap my arms around her warm belly
and whisper,
“I love you, babe.”

But she doesn’t answer.
“Babe?”, I murmur quietly.
She grows cold to my touch
and as I turn the lights on,
she vanishes,
and I scream.

4 a.m.
I jolt out of bed
awakened by another bad dream.
