Almost

I think the saddest word in the English language
is almost.
It carries so much weight, you know?
Full of unspent potentiality.
“They almost made it.”
“They were almost in love.”
“He almost waited.”

“She almost stayed.”

It just feels so,
unfinished.
Like an incomplete symphony
or the forgotten ending to a long-lost story.
Nothing breaks the heart more
than almost.
